A color for the season

A color for the season

Wimbledon Tennis Tournament has just concluded. While the world´s most prestigious tennis tournament, may not captivate everyone, over the last two weeks, this sport event has offered rich material for commentators - from fashion and etiquette enthusiasts to dedicated tennis aficionados.

A key aspect defining Wimbledon tournament as the ultimate cultural event of global reach is the traditional “predominately in white” dress code; while on the court many professional tennis players of the likes of Federer or Williams may have argued on the rigidity of such code, in fashion terms, it has been embraced as an opportunity of carefully redefining a summer style through a protocol of “incredibly proper” attire.

However, the idea of an all-white ensemble as a distinct symbol of tradition makes me smile. I naturally gravitate toward white garments on summer weekends—they feel effortless, fresh, and just right for the season.

If I had to associate the color white with a state of mind or cultural convention, I’d say it embodies the essence of summer: warmth, vitality, and leisure. In that spirit, embracing an all-white style becomes not only timeless but entirely intuitive.

For my summer wardrobe, I always rely on a few white shirts in breathable Pima cotton, paired with matching bottoms in Pima cotton stretch or cotton-lycra blends. The lightness, quality, and natural ability to reflect sunlight make them the perfect choice to mix, match, and effortlessly pack for a weekend getaway. Something roomy like an oversize utility shirt with crisp collar and cuffs that can easily roll up, a palazzo pant with elastic band in matching fabric for the extra comfort at the waist or a draped bottom in jersey lycra that feels like a sweat pant but matches the practical ingenuity of a Claire McCardell sportswear design.

Pristine white, Ivory or Off white are light choices to be seen in this summer.
