The question most often asked of me is “Why open a brick-and-mortar store in the digital age?” My answer is always the same and quite simply, “the retail experience as I present it is so much more than being in a store; you feel as if you are home.” I have always provided a transformative and welcoming experience, which in the digital age is what my customers have come to expect and rely on.
Our Flagship store MATTHILDUR x MARK KELLER is a labor of love which at times hardly even seems like work since the relationships I have built down through the years continue. In 1975 at the tender age of 26 with a great eye for fashion I opened my eponymous store in Birmingham Michigan, a tree lined Detroit suburb, which I viewed as a retail desert. Fifty years later it is a true retail oasis with world class restaurants, boutique hotels, amazing stores both local and national and with the soon to be, first of its kind, an RH concept store with a roof top restaurant. It is both an honor and a privilege to present MATTHILDUR and M x MATTHILDUR in a most perfect setting; minimal yet cozy.
Matthildur Halldorsdottir has been a shining light since the day in 2000 when we met at the CHELSEA MARKET in NYC, during the early days of her knitwear collection made from the finest Peruvian yarns. Today the company has expanded into two distinct lines, manufactured in artisanal workshops in Peru, dedicated to using high quality and timeless clothing for women of all ages.
The mission of the company is to provide the ability for women to build a wardrobe around a curated selection of versatile pieces made with care and an attention to detail while also recognizing the beauty of women. This beautiful store, an oasis in and of itself in Birmingham, is the natural evolution of my years in the clothing business. Dressing and being able to empower women continues to be my goal. Combining experience with unparalleled customer service and one of the most perfectly merchandised clothing, MATTHILDUR x MARK KELLER makes it seem like I never know if I am working or playing.
The experience in our store, with three generations of customers at times, is as good as it gets because of my love for people and our clothing and the thought of retirement never enters my mind; I am having too much fun. BE SEEN in MATTHILDUR x MARK KELLER.
